In South Australia there are two organisations that control and manage the provision of electrical services to your home and business, these are SA Power Networks (SAPN) and The Office of Technical Regulator SA (OTR).
Both organisations determine the rules as they apply to the type, configuration and installation method of your home and business's electrical installation.
All Electricians in South Australia work in accordance with the Electricity Act, SA Power’s Service & Installation Rules, as well as the Australian Standard AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules, which the OTR enforces here in SA.
These rules are in place to provide a consistent framework on how electrical installations are completed to ensure they are safe, reliable, and technically correct.
In certain circumstances, SA Power or the OTR may contact you regarding your electrical installation at your home or business and in serious cases they may automatically disconnect your power or legally prosecute you, such circumstances may include:
- Illegal bypass of metering
- Illegal supply of electricity
- Illegal or non-compliant installation
- Dangerous or unsafe electrical installations
- Moving a point of electrical supply
Irregardless of the reason, in nearly all cases when SAPN or the OTR contact you they will request you engage a Licenced Electrician to remedy the situation to comply with SAPN Service Rules or Australian Standards AS/NZS 3000.
If the OTR are involved, you may be requested to have an Electrician perform a Testing & Verification Schedule (see below) that involves testing the entire electrical installation of your home or business to ensure it meets the Australian Standards. The installation will also have to comply with SAPN Service Rules. In all cases SAPN and/or the OTR will communicate with you as to what works will be required to remedy the situation.
